Throughout my journey as an artist I have been interested in graffiti. I began to explore this idea last year when I attempted to make a word stencil, it didn’t have the message I wanted. It turned out very basic and only really made sense in a certain context. This year I wanted to attempt it again and create an idea that had a deeper meaning. My goal was to make a variety of colors so the group wasn’t bland but continue a common theme so they were still in unity. As I watched films on Banksy, I found a lot of his work very powerful and inspirational. As I thought about what I could do I found that symbols would be stronger than words. I hand drew and cut out the stencils then spray painted it on with underglaze. To give the piece finish I used clear glaze. Unfortunately it covered some of the stenciled underglaze causing the piece to be more opaque. Although it is hard to see some of them, the pieces were not created for aesthetic value but instead moral value. Cupid represents the idea of love in modern time and how it has changed into something more materialistic. The mask represents the people always have things to hide and how much anonymity there is today. The grenade represents the way we go about peace today, fighting wars and killing people instead embracing what we all have in common, humanity. Finally the camera represents the fact that we are always being watched and the degradation of our privacy. In these pieces I focused on contrast, space, and rhythm to create emphasis on the stencil itself, much like my inspiration, Banksy. I used the form of bowls because of the accessibility to the center of the piece. I felt that it created more emphasis to see it in the center, instead of for example the side of a vase. In doing this technique the stencil is created as the focal point of the piece drawing your eyes there. I am excited to expand my stenciling ideas and create more to leave a lasting message with my work.
